The Tigers placed veteran catcher Bobby Wilson on outright waivers over the weekend, clearing a path for Rogers to rise to the Majors. The waiver period for Wilson is set to expire at 1 p.m. Tuesday, and the move will become official at that point. With everyday catcher Grayson Greiner on the 60-day IL, John Hicks is the only other catcher on the Tigers' active roster, meaning Rogers could see plentiful playing time upon his arrival with Detroit.
Rogers is sporting a .250 batting average with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs between Toledo and Double-A Erie this season. He posted a .219 average with 17 homers and 59 RBIs with Erie last season.
The 24-year-old from Texas has been highly touted for his defensive skills behind the plate. He has thrown out 25 runners in 47 stolen base attempts this season.
Detroit acquired Rogers from the Astros at the Aug. 2017 trade deadline when they sent longtime starter Justin Verlander to Houston. The Tigers also received outfielder Daz Cameron and right-handed pitcher Franklin Perez in that deal.
