Michigan's top returning running back is, well, no longer returning.

For the time being, at least, Chris Evans is off the team, the Detroit News reported on Tuesday.

David Ablauf, associate athletic director for football communications, said in a statement, "Chris Evans is not a member of the football team at this time. Privacy laws prohibit us from commenting further,” Ablauf said.

Evans explained via Twitter that his issues are academic related -- and that he intends to continue his career, once he gets things worked out.

I am going through some academic issues right now. I’m working through it now. I will still continue my career at the University of Michigan ! #GoBlue

As a junior last season, Evans rushed for 423 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught 18 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown.

He would have been in line for a big-time role next season.

With Evans off the roster, the returning running backs are led by junior Tru Wilson and freshman Christian Turner. Wilson, who played in all 13 games last season, recorded 364 yards and a touchdown on 62 carries, while Turner turned 20 carries into 95 yards in three games.

Michigan also brings in four-star running back Zach Charbonnet, the highest-rated player in its 2019 class.
