What started as a rabble-rousing chant in Spartan Stadium is leaving a bad taste in the mouths of some alumni and fans.
F-You Tulsa!
That chant got the father of one Michigan State University band member riled up when it filled the stadium as his daughter struck the first notes of her performance.
"The MSU student section greeted the Tulsa team with a chant that echoed throughout the stadium, clear as day," wrote father Chad Sanders on Facebook. "Clearly, the chant was not directed at the MSU band, but it did make the thrill of watching my daughter's first time on the field judge a smidge less thrilling, and a smidge more annoying. A video of the moment would definitely need to be edited."
Sanders wrote at length about his dissatisfaction with the behavior of fans, and his comments seemed to resonate.
"I agree whole-heartedly. WHOLE-HEARTEDLY. And I am definitely a fan of a well-placed, well-timed expletive," fan Sarah Ashman wrote in response to his post. "This behavior is classless and sullies an environment that should be family-friendly and inclusive to all. Football games are NOT about the students in the student section, and they do not set the rules of propriety. And the coaches, on behalf of the players themselves, need to speak out against it.
Contacted by the Lansing State Journal, an MSU spokesperson released this statement:
"Michigan State has a loyal, passionate fan base, including an enthusiastic student section. Sportsmanship is a top priority, including positive behavior throughout the stadium. We are continually looking for ways to add additional positive opportunities for fans, specifically students, to participate in and positively impact the gameday experience for all."
