Casey Mize, Matt Manning and Tarik Skubal represent more than three high-ceiling pitching prospects.
They are the key to the Tigers' future.
If there is a season, should they be at the MLB level.
It is one of the more important decisions Detroit general manager Al Avila could face.
Even if MLB moves forward, it is uncertain if there will be minor league baseball in '20 because of the coronavirus pandemic. MLB will likely have a three-week training period. If the season begins, pitching rotations will probably resemble those early during spring training - and expanded staffs because of lack of innings eaten up by starters.
Mize, Manning and Skubal were impressive in MLB exhibition games before the shutdown. They dominated at Double-A in 2019. Clearly, they belong on the Tigers' MLB staff based solely on current ability. Under normal circumstances, each was in line to start at Triple-A Toledo, and pitch for the Tigers at some point in 2020 if successful.
Their development would obviously be enhanced by working genuine game innings, yet would not be without risk. Mize was shutdown late last season out of precaution after an arm ailment. There is the matter of starting their MLB service clock. Would it be worth it?
Think what John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Steve Avery did for the Braves during the early 1990s, and Barry Zito, Mark Mulder and Tim Hudson for the A's in the early 2000s.
Collectively, Mize, Manning and Skubal represent similar upside as bonafide top-of-the-rotation starters and potential difference makers.
The 6-foot-6 Manning hit 100 mph his last spring training appearance vs. the Yankees after getting knocked around a bit. Mize started the same game and threw two scoreless, hitless innings. Skubal, the lone lefty in the trio, was excellent a couple days later.
The Tigers potential Big 3 are pushing the envelope. They certainly were not overmatched in the spring.
They would help the Tigers now, and it may be right in regard to their player development, too, under these admittedly trying and uncertain circumstances.
