In one of the most gruesome slayings of the 1960s, pregnant actress Sharon Tate and five of her friends were brutally murdered in her home by followers of Charles Manson, who left the word “pig” written on the front door in Tate’s blood.
Now the since-repainted cottage-style door is up for auction.
While the house at 10050 Cielo Drive in Beverly Hills that served as the scene of the murders was torn down in order for a new property to be built on the site in 1994, the door had already been removed a year prior by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor.
Reznor had rented the house, which Tate had shared with husband Roman Polanski, and used it as a recording space for his 1994 album The Downward Spiral, and he had taken the door with him when he left, installing it in a new recording space he had built in New Orleans, La.
Reznor moved out of the New Orleans property in 2004, leaving the door with it, and in 2012 during renovations, the door was rescued from the trash by its current owner Christopher Moore when he learned of its significance, according to TMZ.
The macabre artifact is listed at Julien’s Auctions and bids have already climbed past the $25,000 mark. Bidding won’t close until September.
