Bye-bye, birdie.

The social media app that redefined online communication is apparently being fully remade to the liking of its new owner.

Since purchasing the social media behemoth, Elon Musk has deeply slashed payroll, laying off workers by the thousands. Now that familiar little blue bird is joining them.

Musk has announced that he’s renaming Twitter, rebranding it simply “X.”

Sure enough, the domain x.com now points to Twitter.com, and Musk did away with the familiar blue bird icon that used to signify Twitter’s global brand, replacing it with a stylized letter “X” on the app’s homepage.

When asked what people should call “tweets” under this new rebranding, Musk responded on his social media platform, saying from now on they will be referred to as “x’s.”

It remains to be seen what other changes X will undergo, but this change seems to be widely panned so far by industry analysts.

“It took 15-plus years to earn that much equity worldwide, so losing Twitter as a brand name is a significant financial hit,” Steve Susi, director of brand communication at Siegel & Gale, told Forbes.com.

That report also noted how difficult it is for a brand to become widely used in the public lexicon. But it appears the years of marketing work that went into teaching people across the globe what it means to “tweet” is being cast aside.

Like an ex.
