Robots may not yet be taking over the world, but they could soon be taking over your Uber Eats order thanks to a new partnership.
Serve Robotics, an autonomous delivery startup, is partnering with Uber Eats, providing the food delivery service with up to 2,000 robots to deploy in multiple markets across the country, the company shared last week.
Serve says it designs, develops, and operates its zero-emission robots to “serve people in public spaces, starting with food delivery.”
Last year, Serve and Uber ran a test program for its delivery robots in West Hollywood, and now this launch is an expansion of that pilot.
The companies shared that through the pilot, robot deliveries via Serve increased by over 30% month-over-month. By the end of the test, over 200 restaurants were participating in Los Angeles.
“This partnership is a major step towards mass commercialization of robotics for autonomous delivery, and it is a testament to the success of our partnership,” Dr. Ali Kashani, the co-founder, and CEO of Serve Robotics, said in a statement. “We are excited to continue our work with Uber to bring this innovative technology to more cities across the country.”
While Serve’s delivery robots may not be Transformer level autonomous, they are classified by the Society of Automobile Engineers as having Level 4 autonomy, meaning they can handle driving without human intervention in certain conditions.
“Serve Robotics is shaping the future of sustainable, self-driving delivery,” the company shared in a statement.
