Netflix has released a slew of new images from the upcoming creepy fourth season of "Stranger Things."

When it comes to a TV show with a very young cast, it’s always intriguing to see where the show goes as the kids quickly age. And that should be part of the interest in season 4 of “Stranger Things” when it debuts in May.

The streaming service whetted the appetite of fans this week when it released the first-look images from the upcoming season.

As People reported, season three ended as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) headed out from Hawkins, Indiana to California with Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and his family, while Hopper (David Harbour), who was previously presumed dead, was discovered to be alive in Russia.

The new pictures prove the gang's separation doesn’t mean and end to the their supernatural adventures.

It’s been more than two and a half years since season three wrapped, but the new season’s storyline will pick up roughly six months after the Battle of Starcourt that closed out the last run. And in that time, the group of friends at the center of the series will have been split up for the first time as they go off to different high schools.

As for the new teaser photos, there are a lot of extremely shocked stares into the camera, a few dimly lit teen bedrooms, a picture of what looks like a plane crash, and of course the '80s fashion and hairstyles that should delight the show’s cult of fans.

Netflix’s plot description that came along with the stills reads in part, "In this most vulnerable time, new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery, that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down."

That sounds like this season will continue to explore classic coming-of-age metaphors in the shows’ spooky, phantasmagorical way.

Back in October, Schnapp told People that season 4 will be "unexpected, romantic, and exhilarating….I think this season is going to be the best one yet. It's something to be excited about."

Netflix has stated that this new season will be double the length of previous seasons (perhaps making up for the long lag since season 3), and hence split into two parts. And, season 5 is already in the works. But unlike other such shows featuring very young casts, the producers were not caught by surprise when the show became a hit and demanded more seasons.

In a letter to fans recently, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer explained, "Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but – as you'll soon see for yourselves – we are now hurling toward our finale."

The first part of "Stranger Things" premieres on May 27, with the second batch of episodes set to hit Netflix on July 1.
