A Wisconsin man was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Friday after being convicted of shooting at a group of children who threw snowballs at his vehicle as he drove by them in 2020.
In November, the driver, William Carson, 27, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree reckless injury and five counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, WITI reported.
The 16 years isn’t exactly what prosecutors wanted, as they asked the judge for a 25-year prison-sentence following the verdict.
Court records show that in January 2020, seven children were throwing snowballs at passing cars on Milwaukee’s north side. Carson was one of the drivers targeted by the snowballs, and after his vehicle was hit, he turned around, got out, and fired a gun at the group.
Two of the children were hurt after being struck by bullets in the thigh and arm, One was a 13-year-old boy, and the other a 12-year-old girl, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. A third child was almost shot, but the bullet only hit their jacket.
Eight days after the shooting, Carson was arrested after leading the police on a car chase.
The prison sentence also comes with 10 years of extended supervision, as Judge Michael Hanrahan shared during the sentencing hearing that Carson was dangerous.
“There is this other side of you that is impulsive, reckless, violent — I think self-centered,” Hanrahan said.
