Curt Schilling wants his name off the 2022 Hall of Fame ballot after the controversy that led to no elections this year…and the BBWAA says no.
The ultimate decision lies with the Baseball Hall of Fame’s board of directors, but after Schilling’s diatribe on Facebook requesting he be left off in what would be his final year of eligibility, BBWAA Secretary/Treasurer Jack O’Connell released the following statement urging the board to deny Schilling’s request, which he says is a violation of election rules:
Schilling was the closest player to election in the non-class, receiving 71.1 percent of the vote – 16 votes shy of the 301 that were needed for enshrinement. He, along with Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens – who were second and third in the voting – would all be in their final years of eligibility in 2022, along with Sammy Sosa, who got 17 percent.
