Kyle Shanahan heard plenty of criticism for electing to receive at the start of overtime on Sunday night, with many opining that, with the NFL’s new playoff overtime rules, it would benefit a team to defer and have last licks.
Shanahan said after the game that he talked with the “analytics” personnel and decided receiving was the way to go, which Boomer and Gio didn’t seem too thrilled about.
“See, that’s the analytic part of it,” Boomer said. “The problem is, you have to take into account who the quarterback is on the other side.”
“That’s a lot of assuming,” Gio said. “Where he goes ‘We want the ball third if we both go down and score.’”
Boomer appreciated that Shanahan gave a clear answer, but seems to agree with Gio that analytics don’t take into account the quarterback in Patrick Mahomes that will get last licks in overtime.
“At least he reasonably discussed it with his analytics guys,” Boomer said. “These analytics guys, they get in the way all the time, man.”
