In an appearance with Colin Cowherd earlier this week, the recently-retired Tom Brady announced he will take off the 2023 NFL season before beginning his broadcast career with FOX in 2024.
Some remain skeptical that Brady will ever actually join FOX as the color commentator alongside Kevin Burkhardt in the No. 1 booth.
Tuesday, Albert Breer of The Monday Morning Quarterback was asked by Dan Patrick if he believes Brady will become the top game analyst at FOX in 2024.
"I'm not convinced," Breer acknowledged. "I will say that I think if he does do TV, he'll go all in and try to be really good at it. I'm not convinced that he does it. Just because I think that ... I hate to say it's beneath him, but doesn't it sort of feel like ... can you guys see him like standing in the buffet line with the rest of us at halftime?"
Not only is Breer one of the most plugged-in national insiders currently, but he made his name in the business covering the Patriots for a variety of outlets during Brady's 20-year stint with the team. At the very least, his perspective is interesting to consider.
Breer went on to wonder whether Brady would be willing to be critical of players and coaches, which is a key part of the job that FOX would be paying him to do.
"I also sort of look at him, and how many different ways is he compromised? You know what I mean? Because he's been so image conscious for his entire NFL career. And part of it is, I think he looks at like 'OK, I'm invested with this person ... and he's incredibly loyal.' Is he compromised? You know what I mean? Where it's like, he can criticize this person, but then he can't criticize that person. And that can be really, really tricky."
Patrick and Breer went on to speculate about Brady becoming part of an ownership group at some point in the future, wondering if he could be the face of an ownership group like Magic Johnson is for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Then again, Brady is set to be paid $375 million over 10 years in his FOX contract. He's already estimated to be worth $250 million. If he spends a decade working at FOX and focusing on other business ventures, perhaps he could make enough money to own an even larger chunk of an NFL franchise than the 2.3% chunk that Johnson currently owns of the Dodgers.
