Carlos Correa made his second All-Star team in 2021 thanks to an awesome first half of the season. Excluding the series against the Athletics that took place right before the break — and you'll know why I'm excluding it in a moment — Correa was slashing .298/.398/.529 with 16 home runs, 52 RBI and 61 runs scored. But an illness hit Correa, who wasn't planning on attending the All-Star Game anyway so he could be with his pregnant wife, and it seemed to really take its toll on him.
It wouldn't be crazy to think it began affecting him in said series against Oakland, in which he suddenly went 0-11 in the three games to put an end to a very strong stretch dating back to mid-May. And seeing as we now know he went to the emergency room on Friday morning, following the final game of that series on Thursday afternoon, we can't imagine he was feeling all that well out on the field.
Correa unveiled just how sick he was on Monday evening before the Indians-Astros game, another 0-fer effort from Correa to extend his hitless streak to 24 at-bats.
"I went to the emergency room that first night, got two IVs, and then was laying on the couch the next five days," Correa said. "I got a virus. I had a sore throat, runny nose, pretty bad congestion, going to the restroom a lot and bad headache also, so, it was miserable."
Correa says that missing so much time messed with his timing, but he also credited the talented pitching staff of the White Sox for making it tough for him to rebound. His worst game of the stretch came after that interview, with three strikeouts in three at-bats — as well as a walk — against Cleveland.
Here's to hoping Correa can bounce back and regain his pre-All-Star Break form that led him and the Astros to such first-half success.
