Aaron Hicks was at the plate when hit hit a scorching, 106.7 mph line drive right back at the Red Sox left-hander, which ricocheted off of his throwing hand.

Sale immediately began walking toward the dugout to take himself out of the game, showing a disfigured pinkie finger to the coaching and training staff. Hirokazu Sawamura came in to relieve Sale.

WARNING: VIDEO MAY BE CONSIDERED GROSS

It is probably safe to assume Sale sustained either a broken pinkie finger or, best-case scenario, a dislocation that can be popped back in. Regardless, there is now the lingering concern he could miss more time.

Sale had missed nearly the entire first half of the season due to a stress fracture in his rib cage, requiring months of rehab before building himself back up into game shape.

After tossing five shutout innings in his season debut against the Rays last week, Sale was struggling against the Yankees in the first inning prior to the injury.

The southpaw had allowed three runs — two earned — on two hits before exiting the game.

Stay tuned for any updates on Sale’s injury.
