There will be no conditions on the seventh-rounder the Commanders pledged to Cleveland in the Cade York deal – it will stay in DC, because the Commanders released York on Monday.
The Commanders announced the move just after 3 p.m. Monday and did not announce a replacement, but NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that they plan to sign veteran Austin Seibert.
York was acquired from the Browns Aug. 22, and if he was on the roster for two games, Cleveland would get a seventh-round pick. But, that will not happen after York struggled in the preseason finale and then again on Sunday, missing both of his field goal attempts (from 47 and 56 yards) and booting one kickoff out of bounds – three plays that the Bucs turned into 17 points off short fields.
Whether it’s Seibert, who has played in five NFL seasons for four teams and was cut by the Jets at the end of camp, or someone else, the next kicker will be Washington’s fifth since the 2023 season ended. Brandon McManus was signed to fill that spot, but after releasing him amidst sexual assault allegations, they have also had Ramiz Ahmed, Riley Patterson, and York in camp or on the roster as their kicker.
