Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy to undergo surgery Wednesday

The Dallas Cowboys could be without their head coach on Sunday night for their NFC East showdown vs. the Philadelphia Eagles at AT&T Stadium.

Per an announcement from the Cowboys, Mike McCarthy is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday afternoon, after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

McCarthy experienced abdominal pain on Wednesday morning, prompting further evaluation from medical professionals.

He does expect to coach Sunday night. Until his return, Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, special teams coordinator John Fassel, and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will be in charge.

Quinn filled in for McCarthy at his previously scheduled press conference on Wednesday morning at The Star and said that the team "fully anticipates" McCarthy being on the sideline when Dallas plays Philadelphia on Sunday.

"You think that tough Irishman is gonna miss this game? We certainly expect him to be rocking by gameday," Quinn said.
