DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday that the Cowboys are "likely" to release receiver Amari Cooper by the start of the new year league on March 16, four days before he's due to earn $20 million in fully guaranteed money for the 2022 season.
105.3 The Fan's Bobby Belt was the first to bring up the idea that cutting Cooper was something the organization would have to consider.
“I feel like Amari Cooper’s gone,” Belt said on the 105.3 The Fan on Jan. 18. “That’s just a sense I get; nobody’s told me that.”
Belt then had this on Feb. 28: "Multiple sources have told 105.3 The Fan in recent weeks that both Cooper and DeMarcus Lawrence are potential salary-cap casualties this offseason."
Cooper had a down year this season, posting 865 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 68 catches. That production doesn't exactly equate to a receiver coming off of the second year of a 5-year, $100 million contract.

The Cowboys are currently projected to be $21 million over the salary cap according to OverTheCap.com, and there is a considerable savings to be had by releasing both Cooper and Lawrence.
If the Cowboys were to release both before June 1, the team will save $24 million off of their salary cap. They can save $39 million if they wait until after June 1.
