Anthony Lynn might not be long for Detroit.
Not that anything is imminent, or even likely to go down before the end of this season, but USC football boosters "have reached out" to Lynn to "gauge his interest" in the Trojans' head-coaching vacancy after the firing of Clay Helton earlier this month, according to longtime NFL reporter Jim Trotter.
As of Monday night, Trotter said there had been "no contact" between USC and the Lions first-year offensive coordinator.
Trotter claims Lynn, 52, "would be interested in the job." Maybe so. There aren't many head coaching gigs more attractive than the one at USC, where Helton was the highest-paid coach in the Pac-12 last season with a salary of about $4.5 million.
That said, Lynn didn't even plan to coach this year after being fired as head coach of the Chargers. He said he wanted to "take a gap year and travel a little bit," until he got a pair of phone calls from Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn, two of his former players. He couldn't say no to joining them in Detroit.
Would Lynn ditch Campbell and Glenn for USC? In the middle of the Lions season? Unlikely.
In the offseason, it might be a different story.
