Dan Campbell's latest update on the injured quartet of David Montgomery, Taylor Decker, Carlton Davis III and Kalif Raymond was , as of Tuesday morning, "they're all questionable" for Thursday.
And frankly, Campbell isn't losing sleep over whether they can or can't play on Thanksgiving against the Bears -- he doesn't have enough of it this week to spare.
"You do the best you can," Campbell said on 97.1 The Ticket. "If you think the guys can play and produce and it’s not going to set them back for weeks or whatever, then you do that. But if not and we don’t feel like they can recover, then it makes no sense.
"And so goes life, man. This isn’t gonna be the last thing we get hit with now. I mean, we may have three or four players out for this game and you know what, we may lose four more. So, that’s life. But we’ll adjust, next man up, we’ll be ready and we’ll do whatever it takes to get a win."
The Lions suffered those injuries in a flurry of misfortune in their win over the Colts last week. It's also good fortune that they aren't long-term. Montgomery (shoulder) and Decker (knee) said after the game that they expect to play against the Bears, while Davis (knee) said he wasn't concerned about missing significant time.
If Montgomery can't go, the Lions would likely turn to Craig Reynolds to run with Jahmyr Gibbs. Dan Skipper is the natural replacement for Decker at left tackle, having already done it once this season in Detroit's win over Houston. And either Kindle Vildor or Emmanuel Moseley would step in for Davis at cornerback.
Raymond (foot), though, could be looking at a longer recovery. The Lions used Amon-Ra St. Brown as their punt returner after losing Raymond last Sunday, but they likely won't take that risk moving forward. St. Brown is dealing with a minor knee injury himself.
"Now that we’re in another week, we’re going to have probably a different returner," said Campbell. "And if we need Saint in a critical, we’ll use him. But that was really why he was in there, because he’s sure-handed and we know he’ll get the job done and he’s just so damn reliable."
