In his return to his hometown of Cincinnati, David Montgomery turned back the clock to his days as a dual-threat quarterback at Mt. Healthy High School and threw for one touchdown and rushed for another as the Lions took care of the Bengals 37-24 on Sunday.
The Bengals without Joe Burrow were no match for Detroit. The Lions picked off backup quarterback Jake Browning three times, twice deep in Bengals territory. The offense converted both of those short fields into touchdowns. And Browning was sacked by Derrick Barnes for a safety on his final snap of the game.
Amik Robertson got the first interception -- and his first with the Lions -- to set up three-yard touchdown pass from Montgomery to Brock Wright. Kerby Joseph got the second, and Alex Anzalone snagged the third on the opening drive of the second half to set up a 20-yard touchdown by Jahmyr Gibbs on a screen pass.
Backed by a huge contingent of traveling fans, the Lions went right down the field on their first drive of the game, capped off by Sam LaPorta flipping into the end zone with his first touchdown catch of the season. LaPorta finished with five catches for 92 yards.
The Bengals staged a bit of a comeback in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit from 28-3 to 28-17 on two touchdown catches by star receiver Ja'Marr Chase.
But the Lions put the game away after Chase's second touchdown with an eight-play drive that ended in a 12-yard touchdown catch by Isaac TeSlaa.
Goff had another terrific day under center, completing of 19 of 23 passes for 258 yards, three touchdowns and a nearly perfect passer rating of 153.0.
The win is the Lions' fourth straight and moves them to 4-1 on the season.
