If you ask Lions GM Brad Holmes, "there's always a time to strike."
"And if it comes, I don’t think we’ve shown a time where we’ve been scared to really do something or make a move," Holmes said Monday on the Up & Adams Show. "But it’s always going to be calculated and there’s gotta be a little bit of strategy behind it."
With Trey Hendrickson on the trade block, is it time for the Lions to strike again? In short, don't count on it. The Bengals are said to be seeking a first-round pick and a young defensive player in exchange for the star pass rusher, who's also seeking a new contract.
Asked if he might be interested in an edge-rusher coming off back to back seasons with 17-plus sacks, "Holmes said, "I mean, sacks are good. We have a pretty good one now."
That would be Aidan Hutchinson, of course. As Holmes has said several times before, how many NFL teams have one elite edge, let alone two? The Lions are fortunate to have Hutchinson on the roster and comfortable with Marcus Davenport across from him, despite Davenport's injury history.
Asked more generally about potentially adding to the roster ahead of the season, Holmes said, "We're always staying open-minded. And again, we’re always going to do the best thing for the organization."
"But that was me and Dan (Campbell's) vision and plan from the get-go, is to build through the draft. And that’s why we’ve been able to stay consistent. But no, we’re not scared," said Holmes. "I learned a lot from Les Snead and the 'F them picks' (philosophy with the Rams)."
At this point, he just doesn't seem inclined to adopt it.
