After a breakout season with the Lions, John Cominsky is back.
The versatile defensive lineman has signed a two-year, $8.5 million deal to stay in Detroit, according to the NFL Network. He can make another $1 million in incentives.
It’s quite the turnaround for a player who was cut by the Falcons last spring. Cominsky latched on with the Lions for the vet minimum and went on to finish second on the team in QB pressures (44) in 14 games -- while playing most of the season with a club on his right hand due to a broken thumb.
He also posted career highs in sacks (4) and tackles (30) -- not to mention passes defended (3) -- in his fourth NFL season.
Cominsky's emergence was even bigger for Detroit than the numbers might suggest. In the games in which he was either absent or limited (fewer than 20 percent snaps) by his hand injury, the Lions went 0-5 and allowed 32 points per game.
He returned in full capacity in the team's Week 9 win over the Packers to help spark an 8-2 finish. His ability to generate pressure up the middle made the Lions much more disruptive up front. (He actually led the team in pressures per game, with a slight edge on Aidan Hutchinson.)
Cominsky, 27, is the second key piece Detroit has re-signed on the defensive line, after Isaiah Buggs returned on a two-year, $6 million deal Monday.
