Dylan Drummond's improbable roster bid with Lions comes up short

Dylan Drummond won't help the Lions now, but he might help them yet.

The undrafted wide receiver out of Eastern Michigan, who showed up in Detroit this spring with nothing but a training camp tryout, was waived by the Lions on Monday, according to the Free Press, but is likely to remain with the team on the practice squad.

That means the Lions’ fifth wide receiver job will go to either seventh-round pick Antoine Green, who flashed his speed on a 70-yard touchdown in Detroit’s preseason finale, or fellow undrafted rookie Chase Cota.

That Drummond made it as far as he did in his bid for a roster spot is exactly why he’s worth keeping around. He kept catching passes and climbing the Lions’ depth chart this summer, at one point even earning first-team reps in practice -- and praise from Jared Goff. He tied with Cota for the team lead in catches (9) in the preseason, and gave the Lions a lot to think about last Friday with five catches for 46 yards against the Panthers.

The Lions have a clear top four at receiver in Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, Kalif Raymond and Marvin Jones Jr., while Jameson Williams is suspended for the first six games of the season. If that group is thinned by injuries and Drummond sticks around, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get a shot with Detroit on gameday.

He didn't make the team, but certainly made an impression.
