Ennis Rakestraw is looking at another long-term injury.
The Lions' second-year cornerback and former second-round pick injured his shoulder in Sunday's practice and Dan Campbell said Monday that Rakestraw is facing a significant absence.
The Lions are still having the shoulder looked at by specialists and waiting on a definitive diagnosis, but "it's going to be a while, at best," said Campbell.
There's a chance that Rakestraw's second season could be over before it really started, after his rookie season was cut short after eight games by a hamstring injury. He also arrived in Detroit recovering from core muscle surgery for an injury he suffered at Missouri.
"You hate it for the kid, you hate it," said Campbell. "It's not his fault. Just one of those tough deals. All you can do is try to get it better, rehab, come back stronger and move on. It's all you can do."
The Lions lost another young defensive back in rookie seventh-round pick Dan Jackson, who was placed on Reserve/Injured Monday after injuring his leg in the Hall of Fame Game last week.
"It doesn't look good," said Campbell. "That's another one, we're sending this out to a few more places, but it looks like he's going to be down for a while."
Jackson was battling for a spot on the roster as a reserve safety who would have seen most of his work on special teams.
