During trade negotiations with Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort, it appears Lions GM Brad Holmes tried to acquire a 2024 first-round pick in exchange for the sixth overall pick in this year's draft.
Instead, the Lions got picks Nos. 12, 34 and 168 from Arizona for Nos. 6 and 81. Detroit wound up taking running back Jahmyr Gibbs at 12 and tight end Sam LaPorta at 34 and using 168 to trade back into the third round to take defensive tackle Brodrick Martin.
In draft-room footage released by the Cardinals, Ossenfort is seen talking on the phone with several GM's as he tries to move up the board from No. 12 -- after having moved down from No. 3 for a first-round pick in 2024 from the Texans. At one point, he's deciding between one offer from the Raiders for No. 7 and another from the Lions for No. 6.
Ossenfort appears to be on the phone with Holmes, offering Detroit pick No. 34, when he shoots down a request for a 2024 first-rounder: "No, we wouldn't do a '24 (No.) 1. Nope." Never hurts to ask, right? He then says, "Why don't you just take a look at what it would be?"
Ossenfort is back on the phone with Holmes moments later, confirming "12, 34 and 168 for 6 and 81: OK, call it in. Thanks, Brad."
At No. 6, the Cardinals took offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr.
