The turnover on Dan Campbell's coaching staff continues.

The Lions are hiring former Stanford head coach David Shaw as their new pass game coordinator, signaling the departure of Tanner Engstrand. Shaw has agreed to terms on a multi-year deal with Detroit, per Tom Pelissero.

Shaw spent last season as a senior personnel executive for the Broncos, where he worked with Lions new offensive coordinator John Morton, who was Denver's pass game coordinator. They helped the Broncos, under Sean Payton, make the playoffs for the first time in nine years.

Shaw and Morton go back to their days as offensive coaches for the Raiders under Jon Gruden in the late 90's. They followed similar paths over the next couple decades, both spending significant time under Jim Harbaugh -- Shaw as offensive coordinator at Stanford, Morton as wide receivers coach for the 49ers.

Shaw went on to be head coach at Stanford for 12 years, leading the Cardinal to nine winning seasons and three trips to the Rose Bowl before resigning following the 2022 campaign.

Notably, Shaw also has ties to the Lions. His father, Willie Shaw, was the team's defensive backs coach from 1985-88. Shaw, a teenager at the time, attended Adams High School in Rochester Hills, where he starred as a wide receiver before his family moved to California when Willie became defensive coordinator at Stanford. Shaw would go on to play at Stanford himself.

Now 52, Shaw joins a reshaped coaching staff in Detroit. The Lions have lost a number of lieutenants on both sides of the ball after their best season in the Super Bowl era, starting with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to the Jets.

Both Johnson and Glenn have plucked coaches from Campbell's staff, with wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El and assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett headed to Chicago and tight ends coach Steve Heiden going to New York. Engstrand, Detroit's pass game coordinator the past two seasons, is rumored to be Glenn's target for offensive coordinator.
