The Lions will look a little different in 2023 -- and possibly a lot different in 2024.
The team is introducing a new alternate helmet next season and is in talks with Nike about new uniforms for the season after that, president Rod Wood told the Free Press. The new helmet, which will be paired with the Lions' all-grey alternate uniform, is slated to be unveiled this spring.
The NFL allows teams to change uniforms every five years. Because the Lions last shook things up in 2017, there were rumblings that they would do so again this year. Wood confirmed that won't be the case.
"There will not be new uniforms in 2023. I know people get over their skis on that. It takes really two years to really get it going," said Wood, while noting that Lions officials have been "working with Nike, looking at uniforms that will probably be for 2024."
"It could be an interesting overhaul of the uniforms," Wood said. "We will have a new alternative helmet though this year. We didn’t do that (last season)."
The Lions currently have two helmets in operation: the standard silver one with the team logo and blue striping that they wear with their home and road uniforms, and the all-silver one that they wear with their throwbacks. The new alternate helmet, per the Free Press, is expected to look significantly different than the standard one.
As for the next uniforms, Wood said the Lions will stay true to their silver-and-blue brand.
"We’re not going to the Portsmouth colors," he said. "No, it’ll still be within the blues and the grays. I think it’s too early to say exactly, but I would describe it at least initially as probably being more change than the last time we did it, because I think those were more subtle changes."
