There will be a new face in the Lions' backfield next season, in the form of an old rival.
The Lions have agreed to a three-year, $18 million deal with former Bears running back David Montgomery, according to ESPN. He's a versatile offensive threat who packs a punch in his 225-pound frame.
Montgomery's arrival spells the departure of free agent Jamaal Williams, who became the Lions' first running back in nearly a decade last season to rush for 1,000 yards. He also set a franchise record with 17 rushing touchdowns, but Montgomery will offer more as a pass catcher.
Montgomery, who's also two years younger than Williams, put up over 1,000 scrimmage yards in each of his four seasons with the Bears. Last year, he rushed for 801 yards on 4.0 yards per carry and added 34 catches for 316 yards.
(Williams rushed for 1,066 yards on 4.1 yards per carry, with 12 catches for 73 yards.)
With the Lions, Montgomery will also have the benefit of running behind a stout offensive line. If D'Andre Swift stays healthy, one of the most dynamic rushing tandems in the NFL could reside in Detroit.
