Jared Goff has come full circle in Madden. Can he rise again?

It wasn't long ago that Jared Goff was one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, at least by the standards of Madden.

After reaching the Pro Bowl in his second NFL season, Goff started year three with a rating of 85 in Madden NFL 2019, tied for 10th among quarterbacks with Andrew Luck. He checked in at 81 to start the next season after leading the Rams to the Super Bowl, tied for 14th with Derek Carr.

Then the fall from grace — back to where he began.

With a rating of 77 to start the 2020 season, Goff was tied for 21st among QB's with then-rookie and fellow first overall pick Joe Burrow. He had the same rating, tied again with Burrow, to start last season, his first with the Lions. Burrow, in his first healthy season, went on to lead the NFL in completion percentage and yards per attempt and took the Bengals to the Super Bowl. Goff looked nothing like a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback until a surge down the stretch.

He opens this season with a rating of 72 in Madden NFL 23, tied for 28th with Trey Lance of the 49ers. A smattering of the QB's ranked ahead of Goff: Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Jalen Hurts, Jameis Winston, Baker Mayfield. (Matthew Stafford, in case you were wondering, is 10th among QB's with a rating of 85.)

It brings Goff full circle in his Madden career. After an unimpressive rookie campaign, he opened with a rating of 73 in Madden NFL 2018, tied for 31st among QB's with … Josh McCown.

At the very least, he's in better company this year.
