Detroit Lions release Jayron Kearse

The Detroit Lions released safety Jayron Kearse Monday afternoon.

Kearse, 26, had started the previous 7 games for the team before missing this past Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He had appeared in 11 games for the Lions amassing 59 tackles. Kearse spent the first 3 games of the 2020 campaign suspended. He was arrested last October in Minneapolis for driving while impaired and illegal possession of a firearm. The NFL mandates a three-game suspension for driving under the influence of alcohol.

While speaking with reporters Monday afternoon, interim head coach Darrell Bevell said the team decided to release Kearse in an attempt to player younger players.
