One of the longest-tenured Lions is calling it a career.

Defensive end Romeo Okwara announced Tuesday on Instagram that "after some introspection and meditation I have decided to step away from the NFL."

Okwara spent six years with the Lions dating back to 2018, longer than anyone on the roster other than Taylor Decker and Frank Ragnow. He looked like a cornerstone of the new regime when he signed a three-year, $37 million deal after putting up 10 sacks in 2020, but he tore his Achilles early the next season and was never the same. He was a free agent this offseason.

Part of the appeal for Okwara in playing in Detroit was playing with his brother Julian, who joined the Lions in 2020. That also compelled him to take a substantial pay cut ahead of last season to stay with the team. His body just wouldn't cooperate. He did play in 16 games last year, but managed just nine tackles and two sacks. Julian, a free agent himself, signed with the Eagles last month.

Okwara, who's still just 28, said that "the game of football has been the largest part of my life for the greater of 18 years, eight of which I have been fortunate enough to play at the professional level. Four of those with my brother."

"The experiences, friendships, and camaraderie I have been lucky enough to share with my teammates, coaches, and peers is something I will forever be grateful for. You all mean the world to me and I will continue to cheer you on for the rest of our lives," he said.

Okwara also thanked the Lions "for giving this young kid a chance ... after coming into the league as a free agent. My heart is forever with you and the city of Detroit."

Julian replied in the comments section, "I’ll hold it down bro. Can’t even put into words the impact you’ve had on me on and off the field. Always been my favorite player. You earned it!! Love you."
