The Lions have found a new backup for Jared Goff: the club has reportedly reached an agreement with free agent QB Nate Sudfeld, who was released Tuesday by the 49ers.
In a corresponding move, the Lions are reportedly waiving David Blough with hopes of bringing him back on the practice squad. Blough had originally won the backup QB job over Tim Boyle, but his stay on the 53-man roster lasted less than a day.
Neither Blough nor Boyle played particularly well in training camp or the preseason, so it's little surprise the Lions went searching for a new backup. They reportedly considered trading for Sudfeld before the 49ers released him.
Sudfeld, for what it's worth, is coming off a relatively strong preseason. He went 26-38 for for 254 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in three games.
Prior to his stint with the 49ers, Sudfeld played in four games across three seasons with the Eagles, completing 67 percent of his passes with one touchdown and one interception. He was a sixth-round pick of Washington in 2016.
While Sudfeld is a theoretical upgrade over Blough/Boyle, the Lions have to hope Jared Goff stays healthy this season behind a stout offensive line. They went 0-3 last season in his absence, with Boyle posting a passer rating of 63.5.
