The Lions are adding a pass-rusher with a lot to prove.
Detroit has agreed to a one-year deal with defensive end Marcus Davenport, per the NFL Network. The former first-round pick is coming off an injury-shortened season with the Vikings after spending the first five years of his career with the Saints.
Davenport had 21.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles with the Saints, where he spent three seasons playing under Aaron Glenn and Dan Campbell. He signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Vikings last season, but was limited to just four games by an ankle injury that required surgery in October. He finished with two sacks and seven quarterback pressures.
The Lions struggled to get after the quarterback last season opposite Aidan Hutchinson, whose 11.5 sacks were more than double the team's next closest player and whose 121 pressures were nearly triple the team's next closest player: defensive tackle Alim McNeill. Detroit finished tied for 23rd in the NFL with 21 sacks.
Davenport won't fix that himself, but he does give the Lions another threat off the edge. And his familiarity with Glenn's defensive scheme should help him adjust quickly to his new team.
The 14th overall pick in 2018, Davenport turns 28 in September.
