After getting shut out in the sack column last week for the third time this season, the Lions are bringing in outside help.
The team is signing veteran defensive end Bruce Irvin, according to Irvin's agent. Irvin is a Super Bowl champ with the Seahawks who had 3.5 sacks and 28 tackles in 11 games last season with Seattle. The 36-year-old will start on Detroit's practice squad.
The first-place Lions have 21 sacks in nine games, and 18 of those came in three games. They otherwise have three sacks in six games. After Detroit declined to add any defensive help at the trade deadline, Dan Campbell said Tuesday that GM Brad Holmes is "always looking at guys" in free agency and the waiver wire who can potentially boost the team.
"If he thinks they can bring something to us, he's looking," Campbell said on 97.1 The Ticket. "We're constantly looking to see if there's anybody that brings something different to us that helps improve us or gives us another option to help us, in any phase of the game."
They'll hope that Irvin, who has 55.5 sacks over 11 NFL seasons, helps their pass rush. His addition also comes after Campbell said Tuesday that James Houston, who had eight sacks in seven games last season, "still has a ways to go" to help the team this season after fracturing his ankle in Week 2.
