With a fifth player under investigation for violating the NFL's gambling policy, the Lions are adopting a more proactive approach in educating their players on the rules set forth by the league.
"We just make it a point of emphasis, over and over," Dan Campbell said Thursday. "Just continue to state it."
The NFL is in charge of player education on its gambling policy. The lessons apparently haven't hit home for the Lions, who had four players popped in a gambling probe earlier this offseason, including former No. 12 pick Jameson Williams, and had a fifth come under investigation last week. Only one other NFL player -- Skaka Toney of the Commanders -- has been suspended this offseason for gambling.
Campbell said the Lions are trying to help their players understand the rules by making it "much more an emphasis from us as opposed to just leaving it to the league."
"We need to make sure that we really hit this ourselves and make a point of it. We did, but obviously not enough. The proof’s in the pudding. So for us, let’s take it out of (the NFL's) hands. They’ll have what they do every year, but now we need to put our own emphasis on it. I think that’s the best way to do it, is to highlight it, and that’s what we’re trying to do," Campbell said.
As for the NFL's latest investigation, Campbell said the Lions "don't know all the details." It was reported last week that the league investigator had yet to interview the Lions' player in question.
"That’s in the league’s hands," Campbell said. "But my understanding is, they called it Wave 2, but it could be Wave 1A or 1B. I think this is very much on the same timeline. But look, we’ve made a point of it and that’s all we can do. It’s out of our hands."
