The Lions are cutting ties with a co-captain and one of their best special teams players.
The club plans to release veteran linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin at the start of the new league year next month, per NFL Network. The move will save the Lions about $2 million in cap space.
Reeves-Maybin was set to carry a cap hit of $4.75 million next season after signing a two-year, $7.5 million extension with Detroit last winter that made him the highest-paid special teams player in the NFL. The deal came on the heels of his first Pro Bowl nod in 2023.
Reeves-Maybin, 30, was elected a team captain in 2023 and 2024. But he missed seven games last season due to a neck injury, finishing with 14 tackles in 10 games.
He's spent seven of his eight NFL seasons with the Lions.
