Denzel Mims didn't last long in Detroit. Two injuries didn't help.
After being acquired by the Lions in a pre-camp trade with the Jets, Mims has been waived by Detroit following an ankle injury that led to a calf injury during rebab, per NFL Network. That means the Lions will keep the conditional 2025 sixth-round draft pick they would have sent to the Jets, which hinged on Mims making Detroit's 53-man roster.
With the Lions' wide receivers room beset by injuries, Mims would have had a good chance to make the team had he stayed healthy. The former second-round pick has high-end speed and was also making an impact on special teams early in camp. But Mims twisted his ankle trying to make a catch in practice two weeks ago, which pretty much spelled the end for him.
In a related move, the Lions are reportedly signing receiver Jason Moore, who spent the last four seasons with the Chargers and worked out for Detroit last week. A former star at Division II Findlay, Moore had six catches for 104 yards in 20 games with the Chargers.
The battle for the Lions' No. 5 receiver job remains wide open. Training camp injuries to the likes of Mims, Trinity Benson (leg), Tom Kennedy (shoulder) and most recently Jameson Williams (hamstring), who's suspended for the first six games of the season regardless, have opened the door for undrafted rookies Dylan Drummond and Chase Cota. Maurice Alexander has also popped as a return man.
However it shakes out, the job won't go to Mims. The Lions will keep their pick and move on without him.
