The interview requests keep rolling in for Ben Johnson, one of the hottest names on the head coaching market. Is anyone surprised?
"I would certainly not be shocked," Dan Campbell said Monday. "He would be worthy of that."
In addition to the Texans, the 36-year-old Johnson has also been requested for a head coaching interview by the Colts and the Panthers, according to the NFL Network. And the Broncos could come calling for the Lions offensive coordinator next.
"I think a ton of Ben," said Campbell. "I’ve said it before, I just think he’s extremely bright. He’s creative, he’s organized, he’s a great communicator. I mean he’s got it, and I would do anything I can to help him. That’s the bottom line. Of course I don’t want to lose him, but I’m not going to hold him back either. I would help him any way I can help him.”
In Johnson's first season as coordinator and play-caller, Detroit's offense ranked fourth in the NFL in yards and fifth in points. And Jared Goff, dumped by the Rams two years ago, had arguably the best season of his career.
Another hot commodity on the coaching circuit: Aaron Glenn. The Colts have reportedly requested an interview with the Lions defensive coordinator, who has been up for head coaching jobs in the past. Glenn, 50, interviewed with the Saints last year and the Jets the year before that.
Detroit's defense allowed the most yards in the NFL this season, but made significant strides over the final two months, including breaking the NFL record for sacks by a rookie class. Glenn, a former Pro Bowl corner, is also a natural communicator and motivator who could thrive as the leader of a team.
