Brad Holmes and the Lions said Jameson Williams was the fastest receiver in the draft, and the gurus over at Madden would agree. In fact, they say Williams is one of the fastest receivers in the NFL.
In the ratings for wide receivers in Madden NFL 23, which were released Monday, only one player has a higher speed grade than Williams: three-time All-Pro Tyreek Hill, at 99.
At 98, Williams was tied for second with Quez Watkins of the Eagles. Williams was also tied for the seventh highest acceleration grade, at 95. He has an overall rating of 78, tied for 60th among wide receivers with two of his new teammates: Amon-Ra St. Brown and DJ Chark.
That makes Williams the highest-rated rookie receiver, even though he was the fourth one taken in this year's draft. Of course, asked on draft night if he would've been the first receiver off the board had he not torn his ACL in the national championship, Williams replied, "Uh, yeah."
Williams likely won't be on the field when the Lions kick off training camp later this month, as the team proceeds carefully with his rehab. He's a candidate to start the season on the PUP list. But he'll be a blur whenever he's back to full health.
Madden will continue rolling out its ratings for this year's game over the next few days, culminating Friday with quarterbacks, team ratings and the '99 Club.'
