To stay with the Lions, John Cominsky is taking a paycut.
The versatile defensive lineman, who signed a two-year, $8.5 million deal with Detroit last offseason, has agreed to have his salary sliced in more than half in 2024 from $5.1 million to $2.5 million, which will save the Lions more than $2 million in cap space.
Cominsky's cap hit drops from $6.3 million to $4.2 million, according to the Detroit News. He'll get an extra $500,000 guaranteed in bonus money.
Cominsky earned his contract with a strong first season with the Lions in 2022, putting up four sacks and 44 quarterback pressures in 14 games. But his production dipped in 2023, to two sacks and 29 pressures in 16 games.
Cominsky, 28, was still sturdy against the run last season, and his coaches and teammates love him for all the dirty work he does up front. Hence why the Lions didn't simply cut him to save $4.6 million in cap space.
They'll bring Cominsky back at a reduced cost, and hope that his numbers in 2024 look more like they did in 2022.
