The Lions entered Sunday’s regular season finale with a very slim chance of finding their way to the No. 2 seed in the NFC, in need of a win over Minnesota, as well as losses by Dallas and Philadelphia to inferior teams.

That left many wondering whether Dan Campbell would rest his starters, just trying to get to the playoffs without any injuries.

The potential worst case scenario came into play Sunday when rookie TE Sam LaPorta suffered a knee injury. After walking off the field under his own power, albeit gingerly, LaPorta was carted back to the locker room shortly before halftime.

LaPorta was initially listed as questionable to return, but was downgraded to out for the rest of the game as the second half began.

The rookie tight end’s day started on a much higher note, scoring on a goal-line play action in the first quarter and setting a new NFL record for most receptions by a tight end. He surpassed Keith Jackson’s previous record of 81, set in 1988.

LaPorta, named a Pro Bowler earlier this week, finishes the regular season with 86 catches, 889 yards and 10 touchdowns.

His status heading into Detroit’s first home playoff game in 30 years is unclear.
