Aidan Hutchinson was a rookie defensive end. Ben Johnson was a rookie offensive coordinator. Both are up for major NFL awards after spectacular seasons for the Lions.
Hutchinson has been named a finalist for AP Defensive Rookie of the Year after leading all rookies with 9.5 sacks and putting up one of the most complete debut seasons in NFL history.
In fact, Hutchinson put up one of the most complete seasons in NFL history period, joining Hall of Famer Richard Dent as the only defensive linemen to record at least 7.5 sacks, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries in a single season. The second overall pick was also the only NFL player this season to produce at least 9.5 sacks and five takeaways.
Hutchinson's fellow nominees are Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner, who led the NFL with 20 passes defended and shut down many of the best receivers in the league, and Seahawks safety Tariq Woolen, who led all rookies and tied for the NFL lead with six interceptions.
On the other side of ball, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has been nominated for AP Assistant Coach of the Year after Detroit piled up the fifth most points and fourth most yards in the NFL. The club ranked 25th and 22nd in those categories last season.
Johnson, who played a major role in the rejuvenation of quarterback Jared Goff, was a hot head-coaching candidate this month before deciding to stay with the Lions for another season.
49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, who oversaw the NFL's No. 1 defense, and Eagles offensive coordinator, who led the NFL's No. 3 offense, are also up for Assistant Coach of the Year.
