The Lions took a look at Josh Reynolds as a free agent last offseason, but he wound up in Tennessee. Now he's coming to Detroit.

The Lions claimed Reynolds off waivers Wednesday to address a dire need for receiving help a day after he was granted his release by the Titans.

The move reunites Reynolds with Jared Goff, his quarterback for four seasons with the Rams, and Lions GM Brad Holmes, the director of college scouting for the Rams when they drafted Reynolds in the fourth round out of Texas A&M in 2017.

"Josh is a great player," Goff said Wednesday a few hours before Reynolds wound up on the Lions. "I saw he’s available. Obviously, it’s up to Brad and Dan (Campbell) on that, but I’m a fan of Josh. Wherever he lands, I’m sure he’ll be great.”

The 6'3 Reynolds caught 52 passes for 618 yards last season, which earned him a $1.75 million deal with the Titans. But he struggled to find a role in Tennessee and asked for his release after catching just 10 passes for 90 yards in five games.

The Lions only have two healthy receivers -- Kalif Raymond and Amon-Ra St. Brown -- with more than 10 catches this season. If the change of teams is a downgrade for Reynolds, the opportunity will be an upgrade. He should see plenty of action lined up out wide, where he's done his best work.

"We (scouted) Josh when he was a free agent coming out last year," Campbell said Wednesday. "We’ve talked about him. We know the player well. Certainly, Brad knows him even better than I do."

The Lions owe Reynolds $500,000 for the rest of this season, after which he'll be a free agent.
