The Detroit Lions will be using their third head coach of the season this weekend.
Interim head coach Darrell Bevell will not be able to coach Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being deemed a high-risk close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
Wide receivers coach, Robert Prince, will take over head coaching duties while quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan will take over offensive play-calling for Bevell.
Defensive coordinatory, Cory Undlin, and three other defensive coaches – linebackers coach Ty McKenzie, defensive line coach Bo Davis and defensive backs coach Steve Gregory – will also not coach on Saturday.
Head coach assistant Evan Rothstein, who has never even led a position group in his coaching career -- serving more in a research and analytics role -- will call plays for the defense.
The Lions had one coach and one player test positive earlier this week, which resulted in the team shutting down its facilities on Tuesday and practicing outdoors on Wednesday.
Prince, who has been with the Lions since 2014, does not have head coaching experience at any level while Ryan has never called plays at any level.
The result of the game will still be reflected on Bevell's record, though, per ESPN Stats and Info and Elias Sports Bureau.
The only other time in NFL history a team had three coaches in one season was in 1978 when New England Patriots head coach Chuck Fairbanks was suspended and Hank Bullough and Ron Erhardt took over as co-coaches.
