The Detroit Lions’ quest for a first division title in 30 years took a hit Sunday as they failed to deliver a win against the last-place Chicago Bears.
Much like the rivals’ last meeting in Detroit three weeks ago, the Bears got out to an early lead, only for the Lions to regain control by halftime.
Then, sticking with the pattern, Chicago climbed back in front in the third quarter. Except this time, Detroit never recovered, losing for the second time in three games.
With Jared Goff struggling (161 yards, 2 INT, 1 TD on 20-of-35 passing), the Lions punted on their first three drives of the second half. Their next three drives went fumble, turnover on downs, turnover on downs.
Meanwhile, the Bears tore apart the reeling Lions defense, scoring on four of their first five second-half possessions.
With the game tied at 13-13 late in the third after what appeared to be a missed intentional grounding call, Justin Fields pulled “the Aaron Rodgers,” drawing the Lions offsides and taking a deep shot on a 4th & 13, finding D.J. Moore for a 38-yard, go-ahead score.
Fields added an 11-yard run on the next drive and Chicago all but put the game out of reach with a field goal on their next possession.
Fields finished with 233 yards and a TD on 19-of-33 passing, along with 60 yards and a score on the ground.
Detroit has something of a short turnaround now, hosting the Denver Broncos Saturday night at Ford Field. The Lions (9-4) sit 2.5 games ahead of the Vikings and Packers, with four weeks left in the season. Minnesota plays at Las Vegas Sunday afternoon, while Green Bay travels to New York on Monday Night Football.
