Lions lose another assistant coach to Panthers in Todd Wash

Shortly after former Lions assistant head coach Duce Staley departed for a job with the Panthers, former defensive line coach Todd Wash has followed suit.

Wash accepted the same job Thursday with the Panthers and new head coach Frank Reich.

Wash, 54, had been Detroit's defensive line coach for the past two seasons under Dan Campbell, after five seasons as Jaguars defensive coordinator. The group made big strides under Wash's tutelage in 2022, with the Lions rookies setting an NFL record for most sacks in a season. Defensive linemen Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston combined for 17.5 themselves.

In Carolina, Wash will be reuniting with new Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. Wash and Eviro broke into the NFL and spent three years together as defensive coaches for the Buccaneers.

He'll also be teaming up again with Dom Capers, a senior defensive assistant for the Lions in 2021 who now holds the same title with the Panthers.

Campbell was able to avoid losing his offensive and defensive coordinators this offseason after both Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn were up for head coaching jobs elsewhere. And he found a replacement for Staley in Scottie Montgomery.

Now he'll have to find one for Wash.
