Amid uncertainty behind Jared Goff, the Lions have added a new face under center. Detroit has signed quarterback Jake Fromm, with Hendon Hooker in concussion protocol and Nate Sudfeld coming off a poor performance in the preseason opener.
A fifth-round pick out of Georgia in 2020, Fromm spent most of the last two seasons on Washington's practice squad and hasn't appeared in a regular season game since 2021 with the Giants. In three games that year, he completed 27 of 60 passes for 210 yards, one touchdown and three picks.
"Look, he’s a smart, heady guy," Dan Campbell said Monday before practice. "We feel like he’s going to be able to pick up the offense pretty fast, enough to be able to go out and help us if need be. He can anticipate all the throws.
"And just with where we’re at, we felt like he could come in and function and we needed somebody we felt like could work in the pocket, and he was fortunately available. Had him work out today, looked pretty good, so we’ll see where it goes."
The Lions also announced Monday that second-year receiver Antoine Green has been Waived Injured after suffering a concussion/neck injury in the team's 14-3 loss to the Giants last week. The former seventh-round pick was pushing for one of the open jobs at wide receiver behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Kalif Raymond.
The designation means that Green will stay with the Lions if he clears waivers, but that his season is over. At that point, Detroit could also release him with an injury settlement.
"We certainly had a number of doctors look at his scans and we felt like this was the best thing on our end, for him, and we needed to do this," Campbell said. "So that’s where it’s at. We didn’t want to do this. We love the kid, he’s grinding, he’s working, but that’s a tough injury, it is."
