Lions signing Jared Goff to massive four-year extension, becoming highest-paid player in franchise history: report

After leading the Lions to their first-ever NFC North Division title and their first trip to the NFC Championship Game in three decades, Jared Goff is coming back for more.

Goff on Monday reportedly reached a deal with the Lions on a four-year, $212 million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal reportedly includes $170 million guaranteed.

It also makes him the highest-paid Lion in franchise history. At $53 million per season, Goff is second to only Joe Burrow at $55 million, according to Schefter.

The reported extension comes two weeks after the Lions shelled out the big bucks to extend two other key pieces of the team — WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (four years, $120 million) and OL Penei Sewell (four years, $112 million).

That trio of extensions totals more than $444 million.

Last week Lions GM Brad Holmes told 97.1 The Ticket's Costa and Jansen that Goff had "earned an extension," but said the process of getting a deal done "just takes time."

Goff arrived to Detroit in 2021 after an offseason deal saw the Lions trade longtime QB Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. Goff at the time was two years removed from leading LA to a Super Bowl appearance.

After the Lions slogged to a 3-13-1 record in the first year of the Goff era, Detroit's playoff hopes the following year were intact until the final day of the season.

In 2023 he helped get the team over the hump -- and then some -- thanks to 4,575 passing yards (2nd in the NFL) and 30 touchdowns (4th in the NFL).

His 67.3% completion rate ranked in the top five of all NFL QBs who played a full season, though he had the seventh-most interceptions in the league.

Ranking in the top five of just about every offensive category last season, it was the Lions' defense that was something of a weak link -- especially in the final stages of the NFC Championship meltdown against the 49ers.

Holmes and Co. made it a priority this offseason to bolster that side of the ball -- particularly the secondary -- by drafting a pair of cornerbacks in Alabama's Terrion Arnold and Missouri's Ennis Rakestraw, as well as adding CB Amik Robertson, DT D.J. Reader, and DE Marcus Davenport.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for the latest details as they become available.
