It's the worst-case scenario for J.J. McCarthy.

After hoping that McCarthy's torn meniscus could be fixed with a minor clean-up, the Vikings learned Wednesday that their quarterback of the future needed season-ending surgery. The 10th overall pick from Michigan is done for the year, per ESPN.

McCarthy suffered the injury toward the end of his impressive preseason debut last Saturday, but stayed in the game. He reported soreness on Monday and subsequent tests revealed the torn MCL in his right knee. Surgery was required to determine the extent of the damage.

The Vikings, while disappointed to lose McCarthy for the duration of his rookie season, "strongly believe he will come back better and have a long, successful NFL career," a team official told ESPN.

Minnesota will turn to veteran Sam Darnold as its starting quarterback for the 2024 season.
