Report: Matthew Stafford told Lions they could trade him anywhere but New England

Well, this is interesting.

Everyone knows by now the Lions traded quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Rams Saturday night in exchange for Jared Goff and draft picks. It was also reported the Patriots had inquired on the veteran quarterback.

But, it seems a trade to New England had no chance of ever happening.

According to Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston, Stafford told the Lions they could send him anywhere but New England.

The Patriots do not have much talent on the offensive side of the ball at the moment and play their games outdoors, which both likely factored into Stafford not wanting to come to the Northeast. His former head coach Matt Patricia being on the Patriots staff also could have played a factor, too.

While Stafford's feelings do not represent all NFL players, it could be an indication of what things might be like during free agency and it being tougher than usual to convince free agents to sign with the Patriots.
